Bernadine has watched her mega-divorce settlement dwindle, being swindled by husband no. 2 and conned herself into thinking that a few pills will help distract her from her pain. Robin has become a shopaholic, while a big dream of her life – to wear a wedding dress – has gone unrealised.
And for years, Gloria has taken happiness and security for granted. But being at the wrong place at the wrong time can change everything. All four women are learning to heal past hurts, reclaim their joy and their dreams; but they return to us full of spirit and faith in one another. They’ve exhaled: now they are learning to breathe.
Terry McMillan is the award-winning author of six previous novels. She has been recognised with a NAACP Image Award and the Essence Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Literature.
McMillan said, “at this point I have not actually started reading Getting to Happy, but in thinking about Waiting to Exhale, which I read when it first appeared, it strikes me that this was the original and much better Sex and the City. This remark is not meant to put you off reading it at all, but Terry McMillan was there first with the story of four very different women whose friendship sustains them through life’s challenges.”
Twentieth Century Fox has already bought the film rights to Getting To Happy and Terry McMillan has completed the script, it seems it could even be out this year in the US. There are Facebook groups campaigning for Whitney Houston to take up the role that she had in the Waiting to Exhale film.
