The Senior Registrar, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department, Federal Medical Center Bida, Dr. Abdulazeez  Abidemi  has said measles is one of the leading cause of disability among young children.
He said it is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus called paramyxovirus and is normally contacted through direct contact with the mucous membrane or air. The virus affects the mucous membrane then spreads throughout the body thereby, weakening the immune system and leaving children prone to other diseases.
Health officials have also expressed dismay over the poor turnout of people during the recently concluded measles immunization campaign.
The Nursing Officer, Federal Medical Center, Bida, Mrs Agboola Shola said that measles is a communicable disease which if not well managed in children could lead to deafness, blindness, convulsion, mental retardation and in extreme cases death, and may also leave them vulnerable to other diseases.
A  mother, Fatima Idris commended the exercise saying, “immunization is good for children, that’s why I brought my son to be immunized, so he can be prevented from future diseases”.
