It is so disheartening and unfortunate the way and manner the so-called medical doctors of today discharge their task. One begins to wonder whether the content of the pledge they usually take to protect lives and to care for the sick has been changed or formatted to mean the opposite.

Some medical doctors now behave as if they are bus conductors as the patience and care they ought to give to the sick are not inherent in many of them now. Hence, the saying “what you don’t have you can’t give”.

I was fortunate to visit a hospital recently while we were trying to assist a sick brother. The maltreatment meted out to the patient was unfortunate. Imagine a situation where someone was rushed to a hospital on an environmental sanitation day and having gone through the problems of security personnels on the way, only to spend almost five hours awaiting the medical doctor/owner of a medical facility to attend to the dying patient in his own facility .

But behold!

When the “almighty doctor” finally arrived, he gave an excuse warranting his delay to be ‘routine exercise he normally engages in’. Guess what is it.  Playing football!

I felt like beating him to death.

But that is the situation we find ourselves in this country of ours.

The second incident was when a team of medical doctors at AKTH successfully led to the death of an accident victim. The guy was brought in by his people with blood all over him and as usual, the “undertakers” who run our hospital were busy perambulating the scene, spying, corner eyeing, peeping … and all the like. And after the ceremony, they finally discovered a specimen that is supposed to be used for practical and behold all the “undertakers in the making/student doctors” buzzed around to get themselves acquainted with the act of “modern day witchcraft” and I watched the lead undertaker actively preparing to pronounce their usual judgment/last sermon – he/she is gone as he gesticulates, with a series of questions to the student doctors.

While the gentle soul began to prepare for departure, the undertakers around swung into action wanting to become the “medical doctor” they were supposedly to be to save life.

This doesn’t mean that we don’t have medical doctors and police officers who don’t have the consciousness of Allah in them. The situation is that they are very few.

I write from one corner of the den of a “ federal undertakers den*” in Kano (AKTH) awaiting their mercy.
