Medical experts tasked on rising cases of mental problems

Chairman, Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Committee, Alhaji Lawal Maidoki, made the call in Sokoto  at the disbursement of N56.5 million for physically-challenged persons, free treatment of patients and other services.
He said, “This is necessary so as to put an urgent stop to the obnoxious trend, before it reaches an epidemic proportion,” he added.
He said the committee expended a total of N914, 000 on the treatment  of a total of 526 mentally-ill persons at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kware, in February.
According to him, all the 526 patients were administered with some prescribed drugs and allowed to go home.
He also said that the committee is spending over N 576,000 monthly on treatment of 16 other patients currently on admission at the Psychiatric hospital.
On the N 56.5 million, he said, N45 million was for disbursement to 6,716 physically-challenged persons as their N6,500, per person, monthly allowances.
He added that N2 million was given to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kware and that N2 million was given to the sub-committee on orphans, N6 million to the health sub-committee and N 1.5 million to the shelter sub-committee.
Speaking, chairman of the health sub-committee, Alhaji Nura Attajiri said that out of the N6 million presented to it for the month of February, N2 million was given to the patients’ welfare committee of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto and N500, 000 to the health subcommittee at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto.
Attajiri said women/child welfare clinic and Maryam Abacha women/Children Hospital, Sokoto were each given N300,000
He disclosed that Zumunchi, Maigobir and Binji pharmacies were given N500,000 each and Raudah Pharmacy N300,000.
According to him, N1.1 million was reserved for special cases.
