Speaking at the union’s 38th meeting of its national executive committee, its president of the union, Dr Ayuba Wabba, said transforming the health sector should be a strong focus.
“Our hospitals are only existing in name, with no modern equipment for work,” he lamented. “Most of the facilities are outdated; they are the type some developed countries used in the past 15 years. They are brought to us as new machines for us to work with.”
Ayuba also observed the state of primary health care centres in the country, calling them “empty houses with no modern facilities.”
He said Nigeria needed to make health a priority to ensure facilities in hospitals are up to date.
He recounted personal experience when a friend had to travel to India for surgery. “He got there with some test results he did here in Nigeria, but was told that the results were wrong due to the outdated facilities used in the Tertiary hospitals in Nigeria.”
