 As the world celebrates menstrual hygiene day, the Centre for Water and Environmental Development (CWED) on Monday sensitized girls selected from seven secondary schools in Kaduna State on the importance of menstrual hygiene.

 

The sensitization program themed ‘Empowering women and girls through menstrual hygiene’ according to the project coordinator of CWED, Doris Makama seeks to introduce young girls to ways of maintaining a proper hygiene before, during and after their menstrual cycle.

 

According to Makama, poor menstrual hygiene has caused a lot of diseases among girls child while she stressed the need to create awareness and equip girls with the knowledge of how to maintain the culture of proper menstrual hygiene.

 

Earlier in her remark, Dr. Yusra Muktar who highlighted the various steps to ensuring proper menstrual hygiene described menstruation as a sign of fertility in any woman and should not be seen as a disease. She stressed the need for use and disposal of clean sanitary pad.

 

“Make sure you take your bath at least twice a day, wear clean pants and avoid use of cloths in place of pads during menstruation because sanitary pads are ideal and safe for women. Women must also avoid use of antiseptic soaps to wash their private part,” she advised while she urged the girls to take the message to other girls in their various schools and neighborhood.

 

Girls from schools including Government Girls Secondary school Barnawa, Queen Amina College, Bethel Baptist School, Kaduna State Special Education School, Maimuna Gwarzo, Independence way and Engraver’s College participated in the health talk and were given packs containing sanitary pads, cream, pants, soap, body spray and deodorant among others while the schools were also given soaps, antiseptic liquid for cleaning the school toilets.
