So could Weststar’s goal to sell their cars to a market that does not appreciate Mercedes Benz Ideology be wasted? Well, I had to spend weeks to try to figure this question out.  

I think I finally figured it out. What if all the government offices like the ministries and parastetals were to buy Mercedes? What would it look like? Obviously, this would likely save money for them and cut government’s budget on new cars.  The government will have to focus on servicing their cars and keeping it perhaps for a minimum of eight years. It makes a lot of sense when you are not using it as a taxi but rather, as a premium functional tool. It is better to buy a car that will last you longer than to go into a habit of changing cars every four years. For instance, the Nigeria army purchased a number of the tourismo which makes it a sound investment because it’s for keeps. All it takes is spreading the knowledge on how to take good care of it. Since Mercedes is a premium car, it definitely means it could be trashed when driving even though it wasn’t built for that. It also means it will have more standard equipment than an average car, more space to make you relax and a smooth ride even in city speeds to keep your pulse rate low. Moreover, if you were a director in a government office, come out to get into an E-class or any saloon by Mercedes. People will often desire to get you sacked or impeached to get to that office because it is believed that there is a lot of money where you are. So, Mercedes saloon cars are also sound choices as long as ones intention is to keep them.

 It is a representative premium car that improves one status especially in this rebranding period- a blend of old and new styling put together with up to date and state of the art technology made to look easy. For special protection Mercedes offer vehicles for security conscious personnel in Nigeria. A high level of protection is provided by armour made from state-of-the-art materials such as glass/plastic composites and high-strength special steel in combination with plastic elements. All protective elements are incorporated at the bodyshell stage during a separate and independent production process. It is known as the ‘Guard’.

Though Mercedes cars won’t win on a competition on performance driving against other premium car like the BMW, Audi or the Jaguar, it has proved to be the most comfortable car in the group especially on Nigerian roads. It is a compelling choice. It endures the harsh road conditions quite well. It is the only premium car that many in Nigeria can live with-if you don’t believe me, count the number of Mercedes both old and new on your road and compare to a Jaguar, BMW, Lexus or any other premium car.

So is it good for business perhaps a taxi or a bus in Nigeria? With the little Toyota buses I reckon it’s not really the best investment. But is it premium luxury vehicle to keep for a life time, with a record of reliability  which rarely experiences breakdown issues? Most definitely! But if you can’t afford a Mercedes, get a Toyota or even a donkey.
