The strongest opposition political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the breakaway faction of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), widely known as the new PDP merged.
This timely merger is a milestone in the democratic life of this country.
With this merger, which resulted in the loss of five state governors by the ruling PDP, the APC now has 16 states, while the 16 states, controlled by the PDP has 18. The remaining two states of Anambra and Ondo are controlled by the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Labour Party (LP), respectively.
At the National Assembly, if all the members of the new PDP finally decide to follow their leaders/governors to the APC, then the party will have the majority and be in full control of legislative business, thereby relegating the PDP to the position of minority.
This development will be very healthy for democracy in Nigeria as we now have a strong opposition party. And we all know that in all democracies around the globe, strong opposition plays a very vital and critical role in ensuring good governance by always calling the ruling party to order.
