This esteemed recognition reflects his exceptional contributions to pharmaceutical regulation, quality assurance, and public health administration. It acknowledges his instrumental role in shaping Nigeria’s regulatory landscape and underscores his unwavering commitment to advancing the safety, efficacy, and quality of medicines and health products.

Mr. Michael’s journey in the field of pharmaceutical regulation is marked by a blend of academic excellence, leadership, and dedication. His career began with an exceptional academic foundation. He earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.) degree from the University of Benin, where he was recognized as the best graduating student in his faculty and received multiple prestigious academic awards, including the Dean’s Academic Prize and the Prof. Kulkarni Memorial Prize.

Michael’s academic accomplishments laid the groundwork for his future contributions to regulatory science, leading him to a career at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Nigeria’s primary regulatory authority for food, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.

Building on his strong academic foundation, Michael Eruaga went on to earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration from the National Open University of Nigeria and a Master of Science in Regulatory Science from the University of Lagos. These advanced qualifications deepened his expertise in regulatory frameworks, policy formulation, and public health administration. In addition, he actively engaged in a wide range of professional development programs, including training in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), toxicological evaluation of herbal medicines, pharmacovigilance, and data analysis. These experiences have ensured that his knowledge remains aligned with global best practices and at the forefront of regulatory science.

At NAFDAC, Mr. Michael has risen to the position of Deputy Director and Supervisor of the Abuja Ports Inspection Directorate (PID), where he has been instrumental in enhancing regulatory efficiency and safeguarding public health through a series of high-impact initiatives at Nigeria’s ports.

His strategic leadership in regulatory modernization, trade facilitation, and enforcement has further solidified NAFDAC’s vital role in Nigeria’s port and border control operations.

One of his most notable achievements is the successful deployment of the Ports Inspection Data Capture and Risk Management System (PIDCARMS) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja. This digital platform transformed the online clearance of NAFDAC-regulated products by streamlining inspections, reducing bottlenecks, and significantly improving transparency and operational efficiency. PIDCARMS enabled electronic risk assessments and product tracking, reinforcing compliance and enhancing NAFDAC’s regulatory oversight.

Mr. Michael’s leadership also proved critical in public health protection through the establishment of robust partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. Collaborative efforts with key agencies at the NAIA Abuja facilitated the identification, seizure, and destruction of fake, adulterated, substandard, unregistered, and falsified medical products, foods, and cosmetics valued at over ₦400 million between 2023 and 2024. These interventions not only protected consumers but also strengthened enforcement through administrative sanctions and legal action, fostering greater importer compliance.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a key role in the pilot phase of the COVID-19 vaccine traceability initiative, which laid the groundwork for the NAFDAC Pharmaceutical Products Traceability Regulation 2024. This landmark regulation is designed to address Nigeria’s chaotic drug distribution system and strengthen market surveillance and control.

Mr. Eruaga previously played a pivotal role in the deployment of the TRUSCAN technology in Nigeria, significantly enhancing the detection of substandard and falsified medical products. He has represented NAFDAC in various high-level engagements, including the WHO Member State Mechanism on Substandard and Falsified (SF) Medical Products, UN General Assembly, and the West African Health Organization (WAHO) working group focused on harmonizing regulatory and registration procedures across the ECOWAS region.

In recognition of his contributions, he received the NAFDAC Director General’s Merit Award for Outstanding Performance in 2021.

Earlier in his career, in 2009, Mr. Eruaga served a 20-month tenure as Technical Assistant to the Honourable Minister of Information and Communications, late Prof. Dora N. Akunyili. During this period, he distinguished himself as a dedicated professional, contributing to the formulation and execution of impactful national policies that improved the lives of Nigerians.

Beyond his regulatory and administrative roles, Mr. Eruaga is also an active contributor to scientific research. His scholarly work spans critical areas such as medicine regulation, food safety innovations, and public health policy, with publications featured in reputable scientific journals. He also serves as a peer reviewer and editorial contributor, supporting evidence-based policymaking and advancing the field of regulatory science.

Reflecting on his induction as a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public and Environmental Safety (NIPES), Michael expressed deep appreciation:

“It is an immense honor to be recognized by such a prestigious institution. This is not just a personal milestone, but a testament to the collective efforts of the exceptional teams I’ve had the privilege to work with so far in my career. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to medicine regulation and public health safety. This fellowship reinforces my commitment to these critical endeavors.”

He continued:“Being named a Fellow of NIPES is indeed humbling, one that I see as both recognition and responsibility. My work has always been driven by a passion to improve lives and generate meaningful impact. This honor inspires me to further push the frontiers of regulatory science and public health protection.”

Mr. Michael further acknowledged the collaborative spirit that underpinned his journey:“This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my colleagues, mentors, and bosses at NAFDAC, as well as our partners across sectors. Together, we have made significant strides in safeguarding Nigeria’s health system, and this fellowship only motivates us to pursue our mission with renewed energy and purpose.”
