Minimum wage: Kaduna NLC holds peaceful rally
Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kaduna state chapter on Tuesday held a peaceful rally to sensitize members on what to do should the government fail to honour the agreement reached on minimum wage.
Carrying placards with inscription like, ‘Workers right are human right’, ‘Stop precarious work, pay new minimum wage’ and ‘Labour creates wealth: Increase minimum wage now’, the workers including members of NLC, Trade Union Congress (TUC) and National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) warned the federal and state governments that it would shut down Nigeria on November 6th.
Speaking at the rally, state NLC Chairman, Adamu Ango explained that the government defaulted on its promise on minimum wage and that is why they are staging the rally.
He said, “Since the government has decided to go into the laws to tell us that ‘No work, no pay’ we have also decided to counter them by saying, ‘No pay, no work. The government should as matters of national interest reduce its spending especially with regards to Special Assistants in order to be able to pay minimum wage in their various states.
“We want the workers to know that for progress, there must be sacrifices done and that is why we organized the rally to sensitise them ahead of November 6th shut down except the government accepts and commences the process of perfecting the payment of N30, 000 as the negotiated and compromise new national minimum wage.”
He informed that the rally is also expected to educate and sensitise Nigerian’s on the horrendous plight of workers and pensioners, the insensitivity and duplicity of government on labour issues and to protect the proposed obnoxious polices of government against Organized Labour.
