The forum, which was organised by the African Fertiliser and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP), was attended by representatives of bilateral organisations, US Agency for International Development, UK Department for International Development, International Fertiliser Development Centre, Central Bank of Nigeria, National Identity Management Commision and fertiliser suppliers.
Participants from other countries were brought in through video-conferencing from Ghana, Mozambique, Morocco, Uganda, United States, and the United Kindgom.
The GES TAP programme focuses on a unique technology that utilises mobile tablets that can be operated offline (without network services), ensuring easy and efficient registration of farmers in remote rural areas.
This addresses the major challenge of targeting beneficiaries living outside of the mobile network coverage.
According to Dr Adesina, a farmer reportedly spent about three hours in 2013 accessing his inputs, and in 2014 the same farmer redeemed his inputs using the TAP technology in just five minutes. All the details necessary for redemption were in the TAP card the farmer obtained during registration.
