Minister calls for holistic approach to erosion problems in Nigeria

Ishaku who made this known during a familiarization visit to the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) office, identified erosion as a major challenge in the country especially in the South East.
While commending the various projects undertaken by NEWMAP, he urged the team to restore the South East without forgetting other erosion sites in the country.
He implored the team to follow due process in the appointment of consultants and contractors and ensure prompt payment of awarded contracts.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr. Taiye Haruna while briefing the minister, said NEWMAP was articulated to support President Jonathan’s transformation agenda to achieve the desired impact on environmental  issues especially erosion menace in the SouthEast and the rest of the country.
He said the World Bank has effected a grant of USD500 million for the project which has been approved by the Federal Executive Council and the National Assembly.
He said the people of Nanka area of Anambra State would heave a sigh relief once the programme progresses while the project co-ordinator, Mr. C.O. Nwunne stated the team’s readiness to discharge its duties accordingly.
