The minister who made the observation when she received in audience Lieutenant General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd) in Abuja also noted that habitat destructions and infrastructural decay were other daunting challenges critical to the development of National Parks.
Mallam said the ministry has, however, stepped up actions to address some of these challenges, calling for collaboration with the private sector to overcome the teething problems.
She appealed to stakeholders to commit themselves to the protection and conservation of the environment and its natural resources for sustainable development.
Mallam revealed that the National Park has been upgraded to the full status of a paramilitary organisation, explaining that with the new status, the National Park Service would now be able to curtail incidences of poaching and sporadic attacks on park personnel.
She expressed the appreciation of the Federal Government to the Chairmen of T.Y. Danjuma Holdings Ltd and the Executive Director of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation for their efforts at providing support to government in its effort to provide an enabling environment for the sustainable development of our National Parks.
Mallam noted that the exemplary activities of Danjuma in natural conservation would further enlighten, inspire and encourage Nigerians to deepen their commitment in the conservation of the nation’s forest resources and biodiversity for environmental management and socio-economic development in Nigeria.
Earlier, Danjuma commended the Federal Government for its efforts in preserving the environment, promising to collaborate with government to do everything humanly possible to protect, restore and preserve Nigeria’s natural habitat.
Danjuma told environment correspondents that his involvement with issues of environmental was informed by the current levels of environmental degradations, which the General explained were almost non-existent seven decades ago.
