She made the remark at the launch of Tree Planting Campaign in Nigerian Turkish Nile University (NTNU), Abuja, at the weekend.
Mallam noted that the programme came at a right time, lamenting the growing devastation of the environment.
Mallam, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of her ministry Rabi Shuaibu Jimeta said as stakeholders, the ministry would encourage tree planting to assist in repairing the climate.
While calling on other institutions to emulate the NTNU, Mallam said the ministry has embarked on two programmes, namely, the Watershed Management Programme and the Great Green Wall, aimed at repairing the damages caused by unwholesome environmental habits.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of NTNU, Professor Huseyin Sert, said the university believed that everyone can make a difference in the environment, adding that reforestation is an easy and excellent place to begin to change the world.
He said the university decided to launch a tree planting campaign in the campus with the aim of protecting degraded environment, soil conservation and protecting habitat of endangered species, noting that tree planting at homes and in schools also provide shades and cools the air.
“The university campus is surrounded by trees and well cultured forest because we believe that the high rate of deforestation in Nigeria is leading to habitat loss and species extinction,” he added.
