The Minister spoke in Abuja while leading officials of the Federal Ministry of Education in a meeting with the leadership of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, assured the leadership of COEASU that the key issues associated with the 2009/2010 agreement have been resolved; pointing out that the outstanding issues will be tackled in the coming weeks.
The Minister said: “As part of the process to address the challenges facing the Colleges of Education, the Federal Government has established a needs assessment committee to comprehensively ascertain areas that require attention and those areas that should be given priority.
“The Needs Assessment will enable us know the actual amount to be committed in the development of infrastructure in the Colleges of Education. The Federal Government initiated the Needs Assessment for the universities and we are doing same for other levels of education.
In his remarks, the President of COEASU, Emmanuel Asagha commended the Federal Government for engaging with the union to progressively tackle the challenges facing the Colleges of Education.
The COEASU President urged the minister to expedite action on the outstanding issues raised at the meeting in order of industrial harmony to be maintained in the Colleges of Education.
He said: “For us in COEASU, we believe in continuous engagement to achieve the desired results. The ultimate is not the declaration of industrial action”.
The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr MacJohn Nwaobiala, the Executive Secretary of National Commission of Colleges of Education, Prof. Junaid, directors of the Federal Ministry of Education and top officials of COEASU.
