The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has urged workers to respect appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari in the public sector as it is within his constitutional right to do so.

Ngige made this call in respect of recent protests by some staff of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) over the re-appointment of Prof. Eli Jidere Bala as  the commission’s  director general.

Speaking recently while receiving the report of the committee set up to address the issues some staff of the ECN over the re-appointment of Prof. Bala as director general, Ngige said “the appointment of Prof. Bala is the decision of the president. He can also by the same constitutional power appoint ambassadors and high commissioners and secretary to the government of the federation, amongst others.”

He emphasised that the constitution is the grundnorm on which Mr President’s power to appoint is predicated, therefore civil servants are expected to give such appointees the deserved acceptance and respect.

Speaking further, Ngige stated that the implementation of the report would restore peace to the ECN. “I have glanced through the executive summary of the report and it is my desire that the implementation will bring total peace to the commission,” he said.
