Commissioning the starter packs in Abuja, yesterday, Minister for State Agriculture and Rural Development Mrs Asabe Ahmed, said women were the backbone of Nigerian agriculture, calling for their empowerment.
In her keynote address, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, expressed her delight with the programme, adding that it would help the beneficiaries who are mainly staff of the ministry even after their retirement.
In her address, the ministry’s Deputy Director, Gender and Youth, Hajiya Karima Ibrahim Babangida, said the programme was geared towards empowering women of the ministry who have received training in aquaculture and poultry to engage them meaningfully in agriculture.
45 women who trained in aquaculture were given 500 juvenile, one weighing scale, 5 bags of fish feed, one water test kit among others.
Forty-five others trained in poultry were given 200 day-old broilers, five bags of starter feeds, feeder among others.
The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the ministry and the MDGs for the gesture, saying that it will go a long way in empowering them and their families.
