Deputy director in charge of youth and gender of the ministry, Mrs. Karima Babangida, said the purpose of the brainstorming session is to bring together all stakeholders involved in youth and women empowerment promotion in the country together to share ideas, success stories and challenges on women and youth empowerment.
“This will assist us in designing programmes that are youth and gender sensitive in the agricultural sector and with this we also will mainstream gender and youth, especially women into the agricultural value chain under the Agricultural Transformation Agenda of the government,” Mrs. Babangida stressed.
In a key note address, Bassay Archibong of USAID said that women contribute significantly to the agricultural sector in various ways and that something must be done to increase their gainful participation in agriculture.
“Women’s contribution to farm work is as high as 90 percent, their limited access to productive resources such as inputs constraints their ability to participate in productive and commercial agriculture,” Achibong lamented.
Also speaking, Naphtali Dachor of the Nasarawa Agricultural Development Project stated that youth empowerment is necessary as “no development will take place when a larger population is idle.”
