Minna is set to host a dazzling celebration of tradition, sportsmanship, and tourism as the 2025 Minna International Polo Festival gallops into view. Slated for July, the annual spectacle will see over 20 top-tier teams from across Nigeria and beyond jostling for prestigious trophies at the IBB Sports Complex.

The Governor of Niger State and President of the Minna Polo Club, Mohammed Umar Bago, has extended a warm invitation to polo lovers nationwide and abroad, promising an unforgettable tournament that will further cement Minna’s place on the global polo map.

Receiving the club’s management committee, led by Chairman and First Vice President Mohammed Babangida, at the Government House last month, Governor Bago reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the growth of the sport.

“We are determined to position Minna polo as a global brand and a key driver of tourism in Niger State,” the governor said. “Polo is more than just a game—it’s a platform to guide young people towards discipline, teamwork, and excellence.”

Babangida expressed gratitude for the state’s support, noting that it has enabled Minna’s teams to compete—and win—at major tournaments across the country. He confirmed that preparations for this year’s tournament are already in high gear, with teams confirmed from major polo clubs nationwide.

Minna Polo Captain, Jamilu King, disclosed that the Nigerian Polo Federation has approved the 2025 edition, and the venue is undergoing major renovations. The tournament will feature four major trophies: the coveted IBB Cup, the Governor’s Cup, Emir of Minna Cup, and the Talban Minna Trophy, alongside several individual and subsidiary prizes.

Traditionally the biggest annual sporting and social event in the state, the Minna Polo Festival attracts high-profile guests, local dignitaries, and international polo enthusiasts. It is backed by the Niger State Government and sponsored by a strong lineup of corporate partners, including Profile Group, El-Amin Polo, Mazibe Farm, Niger Food, and Dangote Industries.

Last year’s edition was headlined by El-Amin and Phoenix, with Phoenix—featuring young talents like Zayan Fodio and Khalifa Mohammad—clinching the newly introduced Aisha Babangida Cup. Expectations are high for this year’s tournament to surpass that success, delivering thrilling matches and unforgettable moments in the heart of the Power State.
