Every year, the competition reinforces a fundamental truth: no team, no matter how decorated or prestigious, is safe from the unforgiving nature of knockout football. In this competition, reputation is irrelevant — one bad performance can send the giants tumbling.
Therefore, the Federation Cup, which began in 1945 as Governor’s Cup and later, FA Cup, has long been a stage for giant killings, moments when lesser-known, smaller clubs rise up and challenge the powers of Nigerian football.
While the tournament has witnessed many dramatic moments, it is the emergence of giant killers — those clubs from the lower divisions that shock established top-flight teams — that has become one of the most anticipated elements of the Federation Cup.
From the 1978 shock of Vasco Da Gama FC eliminating Rangers International, to Ocean Boys’ unexpected defeat of Lobi Stars in 2004, the Federation Cup has always been a fertile ground for upsets.
In 2008, Kaduna United made a deep run, knocking out Sharks FC, a sign that lower-tier teams were steadily gaining ground. But perhaps the most unforgettable moment came in 2011 when Ocean Boys, once Nigeria’s top club, shocked Enyimba in a stunning upset. Fast forward to 2025, and the tradition of giant killings continues, with the spotlight shining on teams like Abakaliki FC, Beyond Limits and Solution FC.
This year’s edition has maintained the tradition as several top clubs — Enyimba, Lobi Stars and Rivers United have been sent packing by clubs who, until now, were little more than unknown in Nigerian football.
Abakaliki FC’s stunning victory over Enyimba
Perhaps the most stunning result of the 2025 Federation Cup came in the Round of 16 when Abakaliki FC, a team struggling against relegation in the Nigeria National League (NNL), shocked Enyimba FC with a 2-0 victory.
Enyimba, Nigeria’s most successful club with two CAF Champions League titles and eight domestic league crowns, were widely considered the favourites, but Abakaliki FC, a club more accustomed to battling for survival rather than silverware, proved that in the world of the Federation Cup, anything is possible.
At the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, the match sprang to life early in the second half when Chukwudi Okoro capitalised on a loose ball inside the box and fired it into the top corner, giving the underdogs the lead.
Enyimba, stunned but not broken, fought back with relentless pressure, but Abakaliki stood firm. Then, on the hour mark, Daniel Eni sealed the win with a composed finish, sending the Abakaliki fans into ecstasy and handing Enyimba one of the most humiliating defeats in their history.
Abakaliki’s coach, Emmanuel Ozoemena, was understandably elated after the win, saying, “We came here with nothing to lose, but our players showed belief, discipline and courage to make their own story.”
The victory not only propelled Abakaliki into the quarter-finals but also shattered the notion that only the giants can win the Federation Cup.
Even before the shock victory over Enyimba, the boys from Ebonyi had already etched their name into the competition’s history books when they edged out NPFL side, Katsina United in the Round of 32.
In the thrilling match played at the Area 3 Sports Complex in Abuja, the struggling NNL side stunned Katsina United 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time to set up the historic clash with Enyimba in the Round of 16.
Beyond Limits upstage Rivers United
While Abakaliki’s giant-killing made headlines across Nigeria, another underdog, Beyond Limits, caused a major upset in the Round of 32 when they eliminated one of Nigeria’s most formidable football clubs, Rivers United.
Playing at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the players of Remo Stars Academy punched above their weight as they shocked Rivers United 2-1 to progress in the competition.
Akinocho Merveille scored a brace as Rivers United’s consolation goal came by way of an own goal in the tension-soaked fixture.
Rivers United threw everything at their less illustrious opponents, but the twinkle twinkle little stars from Ikenne stood firm for the big result.
However, in the Round of 16, Beyond Limits were edged out by the more experienced Ikorodu City, who are vying for a continental ticket in their NPFL debut.
Austin Harrison scored directly from a corner kick, a rare feat in football, while Shola Adelani added a second, securing Ikorodu City’s place in the last eight.
No solution for Lobi Stars against Solution FC
Another hitherto unknown side, Solution FC from Anambra State were responsible for the early exit of former Nigerian champions, Lobi Stars from the competition.
Despite their struggles, which culminated into their relegations from the NPFL after 27 years, Lobi Stars were favoured to progress at the expense of Solution FC, but the outcome was different as the Anambra boys came out tops with a 2-1 victory in Aba.
After a barren first half, it was the new boys who went in front in the 51st minute through Emeka Oyuke. Substitute Alexander Oche restored parity for Lobi Stars in the 78th minute but Solution FC had the final say with Ahamefuna Chizoba grabbing the winning goal in the 85th minute for the upset.
Although Solution FC was eventually shown the exit door by Kwara United, who crushed them 3-0 in the Round of 16 in Benin City, they had already made a bold statement by that convincing win over Lobi Stars.
Abakaliki FC shift attention to Nasarawa United
As the 2025 Federation Cup enters its final stages, giant killers Abakaliki FC will face Nasarawa United in what promises to be a thrilling quarter-final clash.
Nasarawa United, despite being seasoned campaigners, will have to be at their best to overcome their ambitious opponents. Abakaliki FC with confidence high after their stunning victory over Enyimba, will surely fancy their chances.
In the other quarter-final match, Ikorodu City will face Wikki Tourists, who are presently fighting to return to the Nigerian topflight.
There is also the clash of NPFL sides, Akwa United and Kwara United, who both see the Federation Cup as their best route to continental competition.
The last quarter-final match will see former champions, Plateau United and serial winners, Enugu Rangers treading tackles in what many consider to be the final before final.
