Sunday Trust gathered that the minor, also a pastoralist however pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared in court.

The police First Information Report (FIR) said the minor stabbed his victim with a knife at the lower segment of his abdomen on June 1, 2008 at about 6.00pm in Ajigin village, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State after a fight broke out when the two were rearing separate flocks of sheep belonging to one Weti Ahmadu. The disagreement which ensued over grazing space, led to the sustenance of serious injuries from knife stabs and cuts, leading to the death of Ahmadu, the court was told.

In the judgment issued on March 24, 2010 by Justice Alkali Gana Wakil of High Court 11 in Maiduguri and as revealed by court papers obtained during the week, the convict was charged under section 221 (b) of the Penal Code (homicide punishable with death) but later changed to section 224, where the offence is punishable with a jail term. The court said the change in conviction charges, at the discretion of the judge, was as provided for under the Criminal Procedure Code on age grounds.
