Misuse of dyes can cause death, FG warns

The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST) has warned handlers of chemical/synthetic dyes on the need to be cautious as its harmful effect may lead to death.

Permanent Secretary of the FMST, Sunday Edet Akpan, made the observation in Makurdi during a sensitisation workshop on local raw materials sourcing and handling of textile, leather, dyeing and finishing chemicals for the North-Central zone.

Akpan, who was represented by Mrs Idris Asifawu, the Senior Scientific Officer, Chemical Technology Department, said diseases such as cancer, dermatitis, generic mutations, bio-accumulation in livers and in kidneys and in most cases, instant death are associated with poor handling of manufacturing chemicals.

“It is very important to understand that safety remains key in whatsoever trade or activity we engage in; as it is often said ‘safety first’ and we must not be expending our tomorrow on the tables of unsafe practices, by resisting innovation because the world is dynamic.”
