The Registrar/CEO of the Council, Prof Anthony Emeribe, stated this while welcoming a delegation of international Lab Auditors from the African Society of Laboratory Medicine (ASLM), to the Council’s corporate headquarters in Abuja
Emeribe said it was gratifying that many medical laboratory operators and facilities had begun to appreciate the efforts of council towards bequeathing a culture of quality medical laboratory services to the country.
He noted that more labs are now keying into the mentoring process, which could potentially lead to their accreditation, adding that it was only a matter of time before others followed.
While commending the team for its sacrifice in travelling from their various countries in Africa to Nigeria, Emeribe noted that so far, 16 out of the 23 first cohort PEPFAR-supported labs in the country have been externally audited, and the next round of auditing should cover the remaining seven.
He, therefore, enjoined the facilities to continue to partner with council to fill whatever gaps exist in their processes so as to prepare them for both national and international accreditation.  “Our goal is to continue to deploy the tools of advocacy, approval, mentoring and inspection among others to upscale the delivery of medical laboratory services in the country,” he said.
Responding, the delegates thanked the council for sustaining its partnership with ASLM and making their visit to Nigeria seamless, noting that their task would have been quite daunting without council’s support.
A member of the team, Mr Teferi Mekonen, observed the enthusiasm of the facilities audited towards improving their standards, this, he said, was evidence that the tools of advocacy and mentoring being deployed by council were effective.
