It was gathered that the hoodlums who were mostly youth, accused the police of causing the death of a man, who they said was innocent, through accident.
The source said the police in a patrol vehicle, were chasing a vehicle suspected to be carrying India hemp along Obehira road and in the process; the vehicle hit a passerby and crashed into a gutter.
The source said the occupants of the vehicle escaped before the police got to the scene, adding that the police on getting there, instead of attending to the person hit by the vehicle, concentrated on the vehicle conveying the suspected substance.
He said the development enraged the youth who said the police should attend to the accident victim before taking the vehicle to the station, adding that a struggle ensued between the police and youth which later snowballed into a crisis forcing the police to escape for fear of being attacked. Their vehicle and the one conveying the suspected substance were however set ablaze by the youth.
When contacted, the state police spokesman, Collins Adebayo, who confirmed the incident said the police got a distress call that a red Honda Accord car was carrying banned substances and that when the driver saw the police, he zoomed off, adding that in an attempt to escape his tyre burst and in the process he killed a man.
The PPRO said the driver of the vehicle escaped while the youth out of anger attacked the vehicle, adding that the police arrived at the scene and in an attempt to prevail on mob from attacking the car they also descended on the police vehicle and set both cars ablaze.
He said investigation is ongoing to bring the culprits to justice while normalcy has since returned to the area.
