A security guard who allegedly killed a man who visited him at his workplace has reportedly been lynched by a mob in Abuja.

The incident, which Abuja Metro learned, occurred on Sunday in the Karsana district, off the Kubwa Expressway in the Federal Capital Territory, involved two fatalities.

The first victim, 29-year-old Aminu Usman, a resident of Gbazango, Kubwa, was a frequent Sunday visitor to the estate.

He was allegedly lured to an unfinished flat by the guard, Abdulhamid Bahago, who allegedly killed him there by hitting him on the head with an object.

About an hour later, a mob mobilized to the estate and subsequently killed Bahago.

One of the estate’s security guards, who requested anonymity, said he saw Usman and Bahago together at a tea vendor’s shop around 2pm on the day of the incident.

“Then, Bahago invited the visitor to a building under construction, only to return some moments later, shouting that the man had been killed inside the building,” the guard recounted.

He added that, “Security guards and a few artisans working at the site immediately followed him to the location, and suddenly he boasted that he was the one who killed the person.”

The witness added, “He also threatened to deal with other people with a machete he was holding at the time. Everyone fled the scene, and the matter was reported to the police at the entrance of the estate, who rushed to the scene.

“We went into the building in search of Bahago, but we didn’t see him. So, we dispersed to various angles within the estate searching for him. He was later traced to a building, and the police on duty were invited before we succeeded in arresting him.”

People interviewed during a visit to the estate said the guard was subsequently taken to the main gate and tied behind a police outpost.

The leader of a police team that visited the facility on Monday confirmed they found the security guard tied down by the estate entrance.

“But we could not take him into our van due to the situation we met at the time, hence we withdrew immediately to strategize for reinforcement,” he explained. “But it was too late because by the time we got reinforcement from the Kubwa police area command, the guard had already been taken away by the mob and killed. So, we only saw two lifeless bodies on the ground, which we took to the Kubwa General Hospital.”

CSP Muktar Goni Adam, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of “A” division Dei-Dei, confirmed the incident, stating that the family of the first deceased (the visitor) had requested and been granted his body for funeral prayers.

Alhassan Saleh, a relative of the first victim, said Aminu Usman, a tailor by profession, was laid to rest on Monday after a Muslim janazah prayer in Kubwa.

When our reporter visited the estate on Monday, a team of police detectives was present. One of the estate’s managers was heard informing them that the deceased security guard had been sacked by the estate management about a year ago due to his negative conduct.

“He was, however, employed by an owner of one of the flats within the estate,” the official clarified. “There are different sections within the estate, so one of the flat owners employed him to look after his flat. There is nothing we can do about that.”

The building where the visitor was killed was subsequently locked up by the manager as directed by the police team. Our reporter learned that the police had also invited the estate’s management for their statement on the incident.

As at the time of filing this report yesterday, the body of the second deceased (the guard) was still at the Kubwa General Hospital’s morgue, as there had been no request from his family members for its release.
