A destitute woman was lynched by a mob in Ilọrin on Thursday after being wrongly accused of child kidnapping.
The incident occurred around the Ipata area of the city, where the unidentified woman was said to have been roaming.
Some residents, acting on mere suspicion, quickly branded her a kidnapper and raised an alarm, sparking panic and attracting a hostile crowd.
Eyewitnesses said the mob pounced on the woman with sticks and other objects, leaving her with severe injuries.
Efforts to intervene reportedly failed as the attackers grew in number and intensity.
She was later rescued by a police patrol team and rushed to the General Hospital in Ilorin.
Medical personnel, however, confirmed that she had died from the injuries sustained during the assault. Her corpse has since been deposited in the hospital’s morgue.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the Command strongly condemned the attack and warned against taking the law into one’s hands.
She noted that the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, had ordered a discreet investigation into the matter to bring the perpetrators to justice.
