A suspected phone thief was set ablaze by a mob in Jos, Plateau State, on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in his death.

Witnesses told our correspondent that the incident occurred in the Apata community of the Jos North Local Government Area.

According to Matthew Paul, one of the witnesses, the young suspect reportedly snatched a victim’s phone at gunpoint.

Paul recounted: “The thief, a young man, collected someone’s phone this afternoon and then fired a gun into the air to frighten people. However, onlookers noticed he was struggling with his weapon.

“The mob quickly gathered, chased, and caught him, then set him ablaze. By the time security operatives arrived at the scene, the suspect was already dead.”

Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off at the time of filing the report.
