The first beneficiaries of the plan are the games masters and mistresses who will be hosted to a one day seminar on the Appreciation of Track and Field and leadership qualities of games masters which will be held at the Uyo Stadium, Uyo, on October 7.
Dr. Lucas Ogunjimi, an IAAF certified instructor and a lecturer at the University of Calabar and Dr. Inih Jonah of the University of Uyo, the state director of secondary school sports, Prince David Ekefre and Dr Ekanem A Ekanem are expected to deliver papers at the event.
It will be recalled that the over 175 games masters who will participate in the clinic benefitted from a similar gesture last year when the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) organized a three day intensive course on the basics of officiating track and field events.
Also lined up for this year is the invitation of six states to participate in the 400 and 100 meters invitational relays. Invited schools from Delta, Rivers, Cross River and Bayelsa states have already been contacted and accepted the invitations.
Consultant to the project, Paul Bassey of DP Communications, commended the unbroken and exemplary social service of the NNPC/MPN to the youths of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as a whole.
“Just recently, Mobil celebrated 20 years of the sponsorship of the biggest athletics fixture in the country, the All Nigeria Athletics championship and here we are hitting ten years.
“It was just like yesterday that Engineer Adeyemi Wilson pioneered this event when he was General Manager External Affairs of MPN, and this was embraced by his colleague in Eket, Engineer Joe Aken Ova, who worked miracles to get the venue ready in record time for our first ever competition on December 6, 2001.
“We also intend to recognize the contributions of people like Isong Akpabio, Susan Eshett, Regina Udobong, Yemi Fakayejo, Nellie Onwuchekwa and Dick Ntia, all Mobil staff, who were there at inception and are still driving the project, Bassey said”
Bassey also disclosed that schools and local governments in the state are presently undergoing trials preparatory to the competitive zonal finals slated for October 27 to October 29.
The state director of secondary school sports, Prince David Udo Ekefre, expressed gratitude to the sponsor for helping the state to discover track and field talents that have gone ahead to don the state colours successfully in national schools competitions.
The grand finale is scheduled for Eket stadium on Saturday December 4 with the Chief executive of the state, Chief Dr Godswill Akpabio, as Special guest of Honour and the Honourable Minister of Sports and Chairman National sports Commission as the guest of honour.
