Over 10,000 couple protection against pregnancies have been recorded in Plateau and Kebbi states following Hormonal Intrauterine Device ( HIUD) scale up in the states, EngenderHealth, a global health organization has said.
Country Representative of the organisation, Dr Kabiru Atta disclosed this in Abuja during the national dissemination meeting of the Catalytic Opportunity Fund- HIUD Scale-Up project.
He said this was achieved following the implementation of the project for 11 months in the two states with support of CHAI and UKAID funding.

He said the project which is in line with the National Hormonal IUD Strategic Introduction and Scale-up plan 2021- 2024 trained healthcare workers , and supported budget appropriation for family planning commodities in the two states.
He said, " We supported the state to train over 46 master trainers, leading to the training of over 224 health workers spread across secondary healthcare facilities and high volume primary healthcare facilities in the states.
"Beyond this training, the project has also been able to work closely with the government to support their budget appropriation. Plateau state, has been able to budget N23 million for procurement of family planning commodities. And in Kebbi State,N300 million was budgeted for the same family planning commodities."
He said the major challenge in the implementation of the project is the fact that family planning commodities in the country are not adequate, adding that there was need for increased investments in procurement of family planning commodities.
Plateau State Commissioner of Health, Dr Nicholas Baamlong, who was represented by the director of public health, Dr Mafwalal Bunah Masok said the project has made HIUD services available across the state,instead of only the Jos University Teaching hospital as it was in the past.
He said building capacity of healthcare workers to provide reproductive healthcare services has enabled the sustainability of the project.
Commissioner of Health Kebbi state, Yunusa Musa Ismail said the programme has saved lives that were hitherto lost to unwanted pregnancies.
He said couples in the state have been sensitized and are adopting HIUD use, thereby helping to reduce maternal mortality in the state.
