The Monalisa Chinda Foundation (MCF), will partner the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to help create public knowledge of uterine fibroid in women.
“There’s no awareness about it in Nigeria,” Chinda said during talks with NAFDAC officials in Abuja on Wednesday.
“We want to see if we can start small by helping 10 women. Surgery and drugs are all a part of it. We also look to partner with some hospitals who would want to help women who cannot afford to go for these surgeries,” she added.
Uterine fibroid is the latest cause MCF is backing this year, after previous annual support for causes as autism and slum children.
NAFDAC itself seeks to associate its brand name for anti-counterfeiting with the image of popular Nollywood stars and music artistes, and singer, Tuface Idibia as its ambassador.
The agency has backed a yet-unreleased movie starring Chinda themed around drug counterfeiting- a problem NAFDAC has been battling for decades.
NAFDAC director-general, Dr. Paul Orhii, said its partnership with big-name artistes was to get them to “use their skills and area of expertise to see how they can assist” the agency’s work.
“Chinda has drawn attention to one of the diseases that’s very common but less talked about – fibroid,” said Orhii.
“Some people who chose to stand by ended up being victims,” Orhii added in his summary of the upcoming movie. “You cannot stand by. Your life is at stake. It could be you, your loved one,” he added.
