The Kebbi State Government has reopened Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, several months after bandits abducted 24 schoolgirls from the school’s hostels. The girls were later rescued by security operatives.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Halima Bande, disclosed this while briefing journalists after a security meeting with principals and heads of schools in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.
Dr Bande said parents’ and students’ confidence had been restored through sustained counselling and the full deployment of security personnel, which paved the way for the resumption of academic activities.
She assured that all necessary measures had been put in place to guarantee the safety of students and staff.
According to her, Governor Nasir Idris approved security awareness programmes for principals and school staff across the state to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
She noted that similar sessions had earlier been held in Zuru, Yauri, Jega, Bunza and Argungu, with the final one conducted in Birnin Kebbi.
She emphasised that principals, teachers and students all have critical roles to play in school security, urging schools to maintain strong relationships with host communities and regular contact with security agencies.
Also speaking, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations), ACP Yakubu Lawal Gumi, cautioned school heads against negligence.
