This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the National President of the association, Sani Mu’azu and its Administrative Secretary, Ahmed Salihu Alkanawy, made available to Sunday Trust in Kano.
The statement decried what it called attempts to trivialise the issue saying, “We are aghast, as well as dismayed, by the frantic attempts of the Director-General, Kano State Censorship Board, Mallam Abubakar Rabo Abdulkareem, and some collaborators in the Kano State government and elsewhere to trivialise the serious sex scandal that broke around him last week.”
It further said the allegations around the embattled DG are worth investigating considering “Rabo’s self-imposed position as a vanguard of morality not only in the Hausa movie industry but also in the Kano society”.
The statement also said ignoring the issue will not be in the best interest of the government and people of the state and the north at large as it will cast a big shadow of doubt over the state government’s purported entrenchment of Shari’ah law in the state.
Rabo was recently arrested in Kano trying to flee the police after he was alleged to have been found in compromising circumstances with a minor. He was later released on bail.
..PDP asks Rabo to retrieve accusation or be sued
Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party in the state has sent a letter to the embattle censorship Chief Abubakar Rabo Adulkareem cautioning him to retrieve his statement concerning the party members with regards to the scandal.
This was contained in a letter sent to Rabo by the party and a copy made available to Sunday Trust in Kano. The letter said it was in reaction to a report on the alleged sex scandal involving Rabo and a minor published in the Leadership newspaper of Monday, August 30th 2010.
The letter further said the issue would have ordinarily not bothered the party members but owing to a statement made by Rabo accusing the party members of a planing to eliminate him. The letter quoted Rabo as reported in the newspaper report saying, “the whole drama was a set up to blackmail me by the PDP stalwarts in Kano State who have been looking for a way to eliminate me.”
It therefore gave Rabo a two week ultimatum to retrieve the statement or be sued. It further said the party has nothing against him, not even on political grounds saying, he is “not a professed politician”.
…As CID takes over case
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Nigerian Police, Kano State Command has taken over investigations into the accident involving the Director General, Kano State Censorship Board, Malam Abubakar Rabo Abdulkareem and subsequent allegations of having an illicit affair with a minor.
This followed the directives of the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Gana, on the grounds that the case was generating lots of controversies according to the state’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tanko Lawan.
Ibrahim Mohammed Zannah, the Area Commander, Kano Police CID, confirmed that the case has been transferred to his department but nothing much can be done at the moment since Rabo is presently not in the country.
“In the spirit of fairness, investigations cannot be completed until he gets back and we hear his own side of the story. He will be confronted on the matter with the facts available to us and from there, investigations will continue,” he said.
Rabo left for Saudi Arabia to perform the lower hajj on Tuesday, August 24, two days after the incident.
