And do you know what? They spend the money stolen unabashedly on their lust and pleasure. They go for frivolous things, debauchery, drinking, camping young girls young enough to be their daughters, gallivanting to other lands in the pretext that they are going there to learn parliamentary ethics only to end up in hotels. They build houses which they don’t reside in. They buy heavy four-wheel drive vehicles that kill them on the road. Their children are heady, disobedient, disrespectful, and do not learn lessons.
Everyday something new comes up; it is HIV/AIDS, hunger, flood, plane crash, dastard armed robbery, abortions, kidnappers, selling of babies to make money, ritualism, hypocrisy, new churches, fundamentalism, extremism hatred, waxed cold love, appointment of mediocre into influential positions, discrimination, or segregation based on religion, tribe and background. Take this, for example, in my local government Michika, directors come to the office, twice a week, if they do show up at all. And when they do, by 2 pm they are gone. No one is serious; indiscipline has permeated every facet of the society. A Senior Secondary two student in school does not know the commissioner of education in my state; an undergraduate cannot speak good English language; when a lad gets 3rd class degree, he celebrates. Dressing in scanty dress is a fad. In my local government, many drive cars without particulars or plate numbers. Smuggling is on the rise. Reckless driving by motorcyclists, properly known as “Okada” is on the increase. Many have broken limbs or lose their lives. Selfishness and egocentrism are the in-thing. No one cares; no one is taking steps to remedy these ills. Everyone is a law unto himself. There is fear, as violence has taken every available space in Nigeria. As these ugly scenes continue unabated, I tend to have a pessimistic view that our leaders have failed us. Righteousness is not here. No one is Holy enough to call on God in Heaven to save the situation. If you tell someone, some neighbour, let us go back to God, so that the situation can be salvaged, they call you “Eccentric.” Do we have to stay in this situation in deceit, waiting for doom, destruction, disaster and damnation? What do we do with deficient, deceptive leaders that rig themselves into power at every turn? Something must be done.
