Despite the combined efforts of the management of Bayero University Kano (BUK), students and corporate organisations to provide safe water, the university community is said to be facing water deficit problem, a source has said.

An environmental expert with the Department of Geography who does not want to be named said “It is unfortunate that both the federal and state governments have left the students to suffer for more than 20 years as Bayero University has been experiencing water scarcity for quite some time.
“It is a total failure of governments; something needs to be done urgently because the number of people living within the campus has doubled if not tripled and is still increasing. There is need to find a better idea on how to provide uninterrupted water for the university community, if not, in the near future, the campus will be inhabitable,” the don said.
The Student Union Government (SUG) had in conjunction with Fidelity Bank drilled a borehole that supplies water to some hostels including El-Kanemi, Idris Garba, Sa’adu Zungur, Dantata and Umar Musa Yar’Adua halls.
In addition, the university has a mini water treatment plant behind Dangote Business School with about five reservoirs in the student hostels.
“The water scarcity makes the hostel unconducive to live in; students find it difficult to flush toilets,” a student, Sulaiman Halliru, said.
“Students waste too much of their time in fetching water; time that we can use in a more productive way,” another student, Shurabil Bello, said.
A female student, Nusaiba Ali said “Water is gold here; you will find many people waiting for the water even before it starts coming. The situation leads to some even fighting. Some will engage in arguing, while others will use force to attempt to jump the long water queue.”
In a radio interview in Kano, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, said that water scarcity and lack of public toilets are the major problems in the university.
He said the money the school received from the Federal Government was not enough to cater the needs of the university.
“We utilize the money we received from students registration to maintain the university environment,” he added.
