ActionAid Nigeria has called on governments to take actions to increase the share of fund allocated to and spent on free, quality and inclusive public education.

“Our analysis of the structural barriers to education tells us that education systems fail to meet the needs of poor and marginalised children especially girls and disabled children and restrict them to exercise their right to free, quality, public education,” it said.

Speaking with journalists in Sokoto, the Education Advisor, ActionAid Nigeria, Mr Laban Onisimus, also restated the need for governments to increase their national budgets by raising tax particularly corporate tax, as a means of sustainable funding for education.

He observed that as a result of poor-quality public education, there had been increased fee-paying private provision, leading to greater exclusion of marginalised children.

He noted other barriers to education to include lack of sufficient, sustainable financing for education, failure to recruit and retain good, quality teachers and poor school infrastructure.
