Nigeria’s U17 girls, the Flamingos, are intensifying preparations ahead of this weekend’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup final qualifying round, first leg clash against Algeria. The match is set to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.

Under the guidance of Head Coach Bankole Olowookere and his technical crew, the team has remained in camp at the Remo Stars Sports Institute since their dominant performance against South Africa last month. The Flamingos defeated South Africa 3-1 in Pretoria and followed up with a 2-0 victory at home, sealing a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate win.

Algeria, their next opponents, narrowly lost the first leg to Botswana 2-1 in Gaborone but bounced back with an emphatic 4-0 win in the second leg to reach this stage. Their U17 squad arrives in Lagos on Wednesday evening, while the match officials are expected to touch down on Thursday.

Ugandan official Shamirah Nabadda will take charge of the match as referee. She will be supported by assistant referees Fides Bangurambona (Burundi), Immaculate Ongiera (Uganda), and fourth official Diana Murungi (Uganda). Ghana’s Naa Odofoley Nortey will serve as match commissioner, with South Africa’s Deidre Carmill Zealand appointed as referee assessor.

The return leg will be played at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida, Algeria, on Friday, 25th April. The aggregate winner will qualify for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals in Morocco, scheduled for 17 October to 8 November, with Africa represented by five teams, including host nation Morocco.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has secured CAF’s approval to host a CAF Educators’ Course from 16th to 25th June 2025. 

“This programme is part of our quest to increase the number of CAF-Licensed Coach Educators across the length and breadth of Nigeria. There will be only 20 participants. Applicants must have CAF B-License, be proficient in the English language, have a teaching background, be passionate in helping other coaches and must have competence in computer software such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
