The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Mr Sunday Babaji, has said motorcycles and tricycles are used to commit most crimes in the territory.

Babaji who spoke during the crushing of 150 seized motorcycles at the Wuye Command of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Abuja, said crimes like kidnapping, banditry, phone and handbag snatching were carried out using motorcycles.

He said the security forces were united to rid the capital city of the menace of motorcycles.

“Most crimes are being committed using these motorcycles and tricycles. It is not just now; since the administration of the present governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasiru el-Rufai, he banned the operation of okada and keke in the city centre. But some recalcitrant persons still operate okada which they use in snatching handbags, handsets, committing so many crimes at night, and the government feels it cannot fold its hands and watch them; it needs to protect the citizens and that is why this thing is being done,” he said.

He said each time the bikes were confiscated, the owners found a way to recover them but now, with the crushing, any okada man contemplating plying the prohibited routes in the Federal Capital City would change his mind.   

Also speaking, the Director, DRTS, Wadata Aliyu Bodinga, said the crushing which had followed due process would send a signal to wayward cyclists that the task team saddled with the responsibility of the keeping the FCT safe is ready to crush the last forfeited motorcycle.

He explained that a forfeiture order was being processed in court to crush 600 more.

He, however, urged the law-abiding ones to ply routes where their bikes would not be seized.
