Most Nigerian coaches lack Keshi, Shuaibu’s charisma- Sarma

The Chairman of Gombe State Football Association, Hon. Yakubu Sarma, has said even as he is not opposed to an indigenous coach replacing Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles manager, most Nigerian coaches lack the charisma that helped Stephen Keshi and Amodu Shuaibu of blessed memories to succeeded with the senior national team.
Since the departure of Peseiro in February, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has continued to search for a new coach for the Super Eagles.
Consequently, local and international coaches have applied for the vacant position and the NFF is said to be ready with a list of coaches that have been shortlisted for the plum job.
Meanwhile, Peseiro’s assistant, George Finidi who is also gunning for the job was appointed by the NFF to lead the Super Eagles on interim basis.
Speaking to Daily Trust on his expectations, Sarma said whether expatriate or local, the Super Eagles deserve a world class coach who will come and impact positively on the team.
“Honestly, my take is that if we have a competent hand who is a local coach, of course, if given the opportunity, he knows the players, the terrain and perhaps may succeed just like Stephen Keshi and Amodu Shuaibu
“But I believe keshi and Amodu had the charisma that most of the indigenous coaches we have now do not possess and that it is one of the major issues some people have with indigenous coaches handling the national team.
“So for me, if we can get an expatriate who is good, who has the pedigree and is experienced enough, I don’t have issues with that. But in case we do not have access to such a coach due to financial constraints, then go for a local coach and give him a long time to develop his own kind of players and formation,” said Sarma.
