A woman identified as Miracle Johnson has been arrested by the Edo State Police Command over alleged sale of her six-week-old baby.
It was gathered that the suspect sold the baby to an orphanage in Onitsha, Anambra State, for N200,000.
It was further gathered that the suspect used part of the money to buy a mobile phone before her husband reported her to the police.
The suspect alleged that she was persuaded by one Mama Joy, who is at large, to sell the baby and give the money to her husband to start a business.
She said she gave birth on July 2, but that she sold the baby due to frustration, lack of food and money to take care of her.
“My friend said since my husband was not taking care of me, I should sell the baby and give the money to him to start a business or buy a motorcycle. When I told my husband what my friend said, he warned her,” she said.
She however went ahead and sold the baby few weeks after her husband had kicked against the idea.
The husband, Johnson Omovuokpor, said “When she told me about her plan, I told her to forget it that it would not help and that we should exercise patience. The next day I took my motorcycle for repair. When I went home to get some money to pay for the repair, I saw my first daughter with my neighbour and when I asked about my wife’s whereabouts, I was told that she went out with a bag to buy something. So, I remembered what she said she wanted to do with the baby.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, said the baby would be retrieved while the suspect would be charged to court.
“It is an act against established laws of Nigeria. Now that we have the woman in our net, we will definitely charge her to court. The baby will be retrieved,” he said.
