A Katsina magistrate court yesterday ordered that one Kamariya Ismail, 25, and her mother, Hassana Sabi’u, 45, continue to be remanded in prison for allegedly conniving to kill a day-old baby by dumping it in a dustbin.

At the resumed sitting yesterday, police prosecutor, Inspector Sani Ado, told the court that police investigation was still ongoing and requested more time to enable them conclude.

The presiding magistrate, Fadila Dikko, then granted the request of the prosecutor by adjourning the matter to December 7 and asked the accused to be returned to prison till then.

The duo are facing charges of culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy and causing the death of a baby girl, contrary to sections 97 and 235 of the penal code law.  

The suspects were arrested by the police when the corpse of the baby was found inside a dustbin at Madugu House along Yahaya Madaki Way, Katsina State. 

Police spokesman, DSP Gambo Isah, said investigation was later carried out and the abandoned dead baby was traced to Kamariya, a resident of Sabuwar Kasuwa Qrts, Katsina whose neighbours knew to be pregnant.  

He said the suspect confessed that her mother, Hassana, helped her in throwing the baby inside the said garbage-can.
