Mothers tasked on exclusive breastfeeding

Mothers have been called upon to breast feed their children exclusively for the first six months to ensure proper development.

Mrs Goodness Chidi, a community nutritionist and president of Nutrition Society of Nigeria, made the call while speaking with journalists during a community sensitisation titled ‘Early Initiation and Exclusive Breastfeeding’ to mark the World Breastfeeding Week 2018 in Kuje, FCT.

According to her, early exclusive breastfeeding has numerous immunological and nutritional benefits for newborns that have been found to reduce mortality in babies under the age of one.

Another expert, Mrs Okoro Clementina, also called on the Federal Government to equip Primary Healthcare Centres with facilities that will promote quality health services.

The coordinator said there was need for the government to engage in massive revitalization of PHCs to ensure that basic health services were delivered to the Nigerian masses irrespective of their location in the country.

“We have more than 200 PHCs in FCT and there is need to ensure that they are properly equipped so that people at the grassroots can access healthcare,” she said.
