Motorists have returned to their regular businesses on Potiskum-Jakusko road as remedial work commenced on Dawasa flood scene.

Kanem Trust reports that the road, which links about seven local government areas to the Yobe state capital, Damaturu, was cut off by flood following heavy rainfall forcing travellers to use canoes few weeks ago.

But the Federal Ministry of Works and the state government had pledged to repair the road when the surface water subsided.

Nasiru Muhammad Dawasa, Chairman of Canoe Owners Association, told our reporter that all canoes have returned to their base because the ground water has diminished.

A resident in the area Sadiq Auwal, confirmed that a construction company has mobilised its machinery to Dawasa flood scene and begin some remedial work some weeks ago.

He said he is delighted that at least people can now travel as usual without using canoe.

Madu Garba, a driver, said they have now heave a sigh of relief after abandoning the road for some weeks.

“It is now easy for us and even the passengers because instead of cutting the journey at the flood point we can now pass up to Gashua and any destination of our passengers”

A worker with the construction company, who doesn’t want his name to be mentioned, said the firm found it difficult to access their project site in Gasamu village since the flood occurred.

“What we did here is actually a temporary work not rehabilitation to allow easy passage of our equipment to our main construction site.

“It is basically laterite application and with this we can now move to the site as well as helping other motorists access to where they want to travel without any difficulty”.

A source from the Federal Ministry of Works stressed that contractors are now on ground and have commenced minor work on the flood side.
