Jose Mourinho has been announced the new head coach of Real Madrid.

The Portuguese coach’s appointment was revealed in a club statement on Thursday.

Mourinho has signed a three-year contract and will coach the side that has gone trophyless for two years until 2029.

He leaves Benfica where he led the Portuguese club to an unbeaten season without winning the league or any trophy.

The former Chelsea and Inter Milan coach returns to the club 13 years after spending three years in his first spell with the Spanish capital club.

He will join the club for new season when pre-season starts in July.

“The Board of Directors of Real Madrid C.F., meeting today, Thursday, June 11, and presided over by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as the first team’s head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.

“José Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day preseason begins.”

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez had hinted at Mourinho’s arrival during his election campaign earlier this month, as the club struggles to return to glory days for the first time since 2024.

Mourinho led Real to a record-breaking season in which the team won the Spanish La Liga with the highest points tally (100), most wins (32), and highest number of goals (121 goals) in one season.

He also won the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey trophies.
