A Malian member of parliament, Mr Yaya Sangaré has urged ECOWAS to form a community defence force to take control of the peace process in the country.
Sangaré, a representative of the Malian delegation to ECOWAS parliament, stated this at the end of the parliament’s Second Ordinary Session in Abuja.
“ECOWAS should assume leadership so that the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali will go and hunt down the enemies of peace than serve as interposition,” he said.
The MP revealed that between January and August this year, over 350 people were killed in terrorist attacks in Mali.  Sangaré said several parties had violated peace agreement, adding that those violating the pact are from neighbouring countries.
Meanwhile, speaker Moustapha Cissé Lo said the parliament would address security challenges in the sub-region during its extraordinary session in January 2017.
The Second Ordinary Session of the parliament adopted the various committee reports and the roadmap for the Draft Supplementary Act on the Enhancement of Powers of ECOWAS Parliament. It agreed to forward the document to the Heads of State and Government for adoption in December.
