On 23rd April, 2017, one of the weekly newspapers, the Daily Trust of Sunday caught my attention with its screaming headline, “Kano Emirate under Probe…” The probe, which is aimed at looking at the cash book and the expenditure of the Kano Emirate Council under the leadership of Emir of Kano, His Royal Highness, Sanusi II in the last three years, is being conducted by Kano Anti-corruption Commission under the substantive chairmanship of Magaji Muhuyi Rimin/Gado.
The Kano Anti-Corruption Commission chairman does not require introduction, because many people in and outside Kano state are already familiar with him and for what he is. But for the purpose of hindsight, it is axiomatic to say a little about the fearless and a just crusader of justice and equity, and who, to the best of my knowledge, does things to express and not to impress.
Muhuyi is a human rights activist and an anti-corruption crusader. He is outspoken and had fought various administrations of the state. Since August 12, 2015 when the State House of Assembly confirmed his appointment as Chairman of Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Muhuyi has been up and doing. He has handled hundreds of public complaints without fear or favour.
Since the establishment of the Commission in 2003, Muhuyi he has dispassionately dispense justice without looking at one’s status in the society. In other words, Muhuyi looks at the truth of the fact more often than what one may expect. He investigates based on complaints and no one has ever genuinely said that he/she has been shortchanged by the Commission under Muhuyi.
So, when I read in the Daily Trust of Sunday instant that the Kano State Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating the Kano Emirate Council, I have no doubt in whether or not justice and equity will prevail at the end of the investigation, especially knowing full well that the
chairman of the investigating panel is a no-nonsense man; a man who looks at issues dispassionately. So, it does not matter who is involved and what is involved.
Muhuyi’s anti-graft body has dealt with cases involving high ranking officers of the state without much controversy. It is therefore certain that the ongoing investigation into the expenditure of Kano Emirate Council should not be different.
Above all, based on demand from the Kano State Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, the Kano Emirate Council has already made its expenditure public through a press conference. It is now left for the investigating panel to see if the complaint it received against the Emirate Council is true or false. Wherever the pendulum goes, it will be for the interest of Kano and whoever is involved. More importantly too, the ongoing probe of the Kano Emirate Council is a signal to anyone to know that no one, irrespective of class, is above probe. The only deciding factor at the end of the day is the fact and figure.
