A 46-year-old murder suspect, Mr. Amadin Williams, has denied intentionally killing one Eghosa Osarietinomwan with a knife, claiming he died from an injury sustained during a struggle after the victim allegedly brandished the weapon to stab him.
Speaking with Daily Trust at the police station, Amadin explained that the conflict began over a Christmas gift.
He said, “I am a member of the pipeline surveillance team. My boss, who is also my uncle, gave out Christmas fowls to people but didn’t give me one.
“So, I went to ask him for mine, and he said he wouldn’t give me any because he could not be paying me salary and still provide a fowl for Christmas.”
Amadin said shortly after this, the victim accosted him, questioning why he was requesting a fowl from the boss when he was not an indigene of the community, which led to an altercation.
Amadin further said the victim, a vigilante, produced a knife and said, “I will kill you and nothing will happen.”
The suspect explained that he called another vigilante, a mutual friend, to inform him of the threat and asked him to speak with the deceased, but that the victim refused to talk.
He further said, “When he declined, I decided to walk away. But as I was leaving, he attempted to stab me. In the course of struggling for the knife, he sustained an injury and was rushed to the hospital where he later died.”
He admitted to absconding after the incident, fearing that the community would kill him.
He noted that the initial report that he stabbed the victim while the latter was going to the toilet was untrue.
He said, “I regret my action and I blame myself for struggling for the knife. I should have just walked away. I am begging his family to forgive me.”
The incident occurred on December 22, 2025, in Oben community in Orhionmwon LGA.
