Kano Pillars Chief Coach, Ibrahim Musa, has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to give more opportunities to indigenous coaches to take charge of the senior national team, the Super Eagles.

The football tactician is of the view that Nigeria is blessed with local coaches who have the capacity to lead the Super Eagles.

He, therefore, wondered why there appears to be over-dependence on expatriate coaches when there are even more competent football tacticians at home to guide the Super Eagles to podium appearances in international football.

While reminiscing, the experienced coach popularly called ‘Jugunu’ also cited late Stephen Keshi as a classical example of the coaching abilities of indigenous coaches.

He said “As an authority in the field and one who has closely monitored the performances of the Super Eagles over the years under both foreign and local coaches, I strongly advocate for Nigerian coaches to be given the opportunity to handle their national team.

“A good example is the tenure of the late Stephen Keshi when we triumphed in the African Cup of Nations in 2013. Keshi didn’t only achieve this feat but brought to limelight some youngsters.

“What Keshi achieved within a few years is yet to be matched by successive foreign coaches like Gernot Rohr and Jose Peseiro.

Coach Musa, therefore, said based on empirical and verifiable achievements, Nigerian football stakeholders should support calls for indigenous coaches to be given the chance to manage the Super Eagles.

The Kano Pillars tactician concluded that local coaches who are cost effective would perform better than foreign coaches who are paid scarce foreign currencies.
