The beneficiaries, drawn from different parts of the state, were grouped into five categories comprising poverty alleviation and economic empowerment; scholarships and educational support; accommodation; health and well-being, debt settlement and COVID-19 palliative.

The items distributed included; 10 tricycles, 17 sewing machines, 28 deep freezers, four generators, three laptops, and one dispatch bike.

The Chairman, Zakat Committee, Alhaji Yunus Olalekan Saliu, said the gesture was to alleviate poverty and economically empower the beneficiaries.

Saliu urged the affluent to contribute to the Zakat initiative in order to “help in reducing the hardship and anguish of the many Nigerians estimated to be over eighty million, living in extreme poverty.”

“I would like to stress that the rich and the affluent would not be able to enjoy their wealth comfortably unless they take good care of the poor and the needy,” he said.

President of LEMU, Dr. Kamoru Omotosho, urged the beneficiaries to use the items judiciously to empower themselves and surmount the challenges of poverty.
