The appeal was made by the Kano State Coordinator of the initiative, Alhaji Bello Abdu Magaji, while delivering a welcome address at the occasion of the disbursement of income generating equipment to orphans’, caregivers and food supplements to orphans selected from some communities in Kano.

Magaji said it was important that the public contribute to the basic needs of children who lost their parents to different incidences as sickness and accidens. He said it was important that as Muslims, people take the responsibilities of orphans in their communities, saying, it was one act that Allah had promised to reward people abundantly in the hereafter.

He said 158 caregivers to orphans who lost their parents to HIV/AIDS and other causes benefitted from the gesture while 100 children were supported with food supplements. He also said the group has identified over 300 care givers as well as many children in different communities who were in need of such support but USI could only afford to assist 158 women and 100 children.

Also speaking, the National Coordinator of the initiative, Alhaji Ibrahim Dola, said the initiative was borne out of the need for a quick and active response to the needs of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. He said the initiative expanded its scope to provide income generating activities with a view to assist the caregivers and the orphans as well.

He said the initiative which worked in Nasarawa, Bauchi and Kano States has so far enrolled a total of 1390 orphans in formal school through the Universal Basic Education system while many have been supported with food items.
