A coalition of Muslim women groups under the auspices of Women in Da’awah (WID) Organization has urged the Federal Government and wealthy individuals in the country to see the eradication of poverty as their priority.

The made the plea in a communiqué at the end of their 12th annual National Conference held in Bauchi State and themed “So, verily, with every difficulty, there is relief, verily, with every difficulty there is relief” (Qur’an 94:5-6).

The communiqué jointly signed by the National Ameerah Hajiya Maryam Idris Othman and National Secretary Zainab Umar said the conference was attended by 477 delegates from 18 northern states, FCT, Lagos, Osun and Oyo states and also representatives of the hearing impaired persons.

The conference among others resolved that Women in Da’awah should consider implementing a Waqf (endowment) as a means of sustaining their da’awah (Islamic propagation) activities and making better impact.

“Policy makers, educationists and NGOs should encourage and provide the framework for youths to be self-reliant instead of waiting for white collar jobs. Muslims should mobilize themselves to create and partake in halal investments. People should be empowered to adopt good financial management techniques such that they earnings with expenditure to avoid the vicious cycle of poverty and misery.

“It is of utmost importance that governments and community associations at all levels take necessary steps to address poverty and improve the quality of life of the people. The scourge of substance abuse among youths should be properly addressed by government with a view to addressing the cause and proffering sustainable solutions. Elites and the relevant community structures should curb excesses that have become part of wedding ceremonies among Muslims to deal with the apparent societal dislocation,” the communiqué said.

It listed the first lady, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, represented by Hadiza Mohammed Abubakar; representative of the wife of the former Vice President Amina Namadi Sambo, Wife of the Governor of Bauchi State represented by the Commissioner for Science and Technology, wife of the Governor of Katsina State, representative of the Wife of the Governor of Gombe State, the Sultan of Sokoto represented by the Emir of Bauchi the Mai of Tula and Aisha Dukku among others as dignitaries that attended the conference.
